What I’m Doing

It’s easy to set up a blog and ramble about how great I am, so I put this page together to showcase what I’m actually working on. Think of it as an online portfolio of sorts.

Work Experience

My father once said “Get a job, hippie!” So I did. Even before graduating from Tech, I had four summer internships and I worked on campus.

Program Manager, Microsoft Office User Experience, Microsoft Corporation

July 2011 – present

Geospatial Services Intern, ConocoPhillips Company

May 2010-August 2010

As a geospatial services intern, I worked with the various geographic information systems in use for the upstream operations (drilling, production, exploration, etc.) at ConocoPhillips. My primary projects during this time were:

  • Metadata portal — The map data in use at ConocoPhillips has a large amount of metadata associated with it that allows the users to organize their work. I worked with ESRI’s Geoportal Toolkit to configure and launch a Geoportal that allowed users to search for and download maps and map information using only their web browsers.
  • System administration dashboard — There are a large number of servers and services required to manage a GIS operation, and I was responsible for redesigning the web application that our system administrator used to monitor these systems. I got to learn a bit of Flex programming while I was at it.

Software Engineering Intern, Computer Services, Inc.

Summers 2007, 2008, 2009

CSI is a company that provides software and data processing services for community banks. During my time at CSI I worked on two teams:

  • Time Deposit Accounting — I was primarily an XGEN/Cobol/DMSII developer for the systems used to process IRA’s, CD’s and various other acronyms.
  • Database team — I worked on various data management and data extraction projects for various teams within the Software Engineering Group.

Georgia Tech

Student Government Association

I had the honor of serving as a member of our Student Government Association starting in the Fall of 2008. I worked as a member of the Information Technology Committee in the Fall of 2008 and Spring of 2009, and was appointed Chair of the committee in the Summer of 2009. I served as chair until I graduated in May of 2011. It was a unique opportunity to improve student-OIT relations, increase transparency in SGA, and enhance the student experience.

  • SGA Website –  Our first big initiative was to launch a new website. It’s powered by Drupal, and in addition to content management I developed a few custom modules, and did a bit of hacking on Drupal’s core.
  • Project Management for the Course Critique rewrite – GT’s SGA is responsible for maintaining a web application called Course Critique, and lately it’s been a big old ball of suck. Starting in early January, I formed a team of student software developers to begin a rewrite of the software. We released an update in Fall 2010 with Course Survey integration.
  • Campus Portal Committee (Member, 2009. Chair 2010-2011). In Spring of 2011 I conducted a campus-wide survey to gather and assess student opinion.
  • Student Information Systems Governance Board student representative
  • Established a Student Advisory Board for Georgia Tech’s Office of Information Technology
  • Worked with others in SGA to compose an Information Technology Whitepaper that outlined students’ concerns with IT. This paper was presented to the Institute President and his cabinet.

Connect with Tech

Connect with Tech is Georgia Tech’s overnight visitation program for high school juniors and seniors. I served on the Advisory Board from Spring of 2008 to Spring 2011, and was a member of the host team in Fall 2007 and Spring 2008. As an Advisory Board member I was responsible for the planning and implementation of the 8 sessions each year. In addition to the administrative work, I also conducted tours, information sessions, and acted as the face of Georgia Tech to prospective students and their parents.

  • Connect with Tech Host Team management site – One my my responsibilities as a member of the Connect with Tech Advisory Board was to manage all of our data services. The website that we used to manage our host team (150+ students) was written in PHP with a MySQL database. In addition to the website, I also managed the Filemaker database used for in-office host team management. The fun task of trying to keep them in sync fell on me, as well.

Other Projects

  • HappyFridge – Think Social Groceries (Soceries? That just sounds gross.) HappyFridge is an online grocery list that you can share with family, roommates, coworkers and friends.
  • Wannabe Foodie – Not a software project, but I’ve taken up cooking and decided to blog about my adventures.
